Leaf Peeping 101 - Where to Go on the East Coast for the Best Fall Foliage

Whether you are visiting or live in the East Coast year round, fall is by far the most picturesque season in the area. The fall colors in the mountains along the East Coast are unbelievable, and if you’re planning a trip to see them, you’ll want to find the right locations. Here are some of the best places along the East Coast to take in the sights of this colorful season.

Route 17 in Maine

If your travels are taking you to Maine, jump on Route 17. This roadway stretches from Rockland on the coast all the way to Augusta, the state’s capital, and will take you past some of the state’s most beautiful scenery along the way. During your drive you will travel past Baxter State Park and drive around Sebago Lake, so keep your camera handy.

Route 44 in Connecticut

Connecticut is another state full of great vistas in the fall, and Route 44 is one spot you can see quite a few of them. This drive will take you through Natchaug State Forest. This natural area sits at the juncture of the Still and Bigelow rivers, providing beautiful views. It also passes through Mashamoquet Brook State Park, another great spot for seeing fall foliage. Route 44 spans the entire length of the state, so plan your visit carefully so you can see these parks along the way.

Hudson River Valley in New York

The Hudson River Valley in New York is one of the most popular places to go to see fall foliage. Consider a visit to the Point Lookout Inn, which is on the Palisades Interstate Parkway, to see a panoramic view of the fall colors. If you visit on a clear day, you can see five states from this spot.

Virginia’s Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Mountains are another famous spot for leaf peeping, and the Blue Ridge Parkway provides some of the best views of them. Peak season here is late October into early November, and you will enjoy seeing the changes of plant species as you go up in elevation along the parkway. Be certain to plan stops at Milepost 139, the Cahas Knob Overlook, and Milepost 176.1, Mabry Hill, which are two of the most picturesque spots along the way.
